Erlang

Concurrent, fault-tolerant language from Ericsson — the foundation of the BEAM VM that also powers Elixir.

Erlang was built by Ericsson to power telephone switches that could not go down. Its actor model, supervision trees, and hot code reloading enable systems with “nine nines” (99.9999999%) uptime. WhatsApp ran on Erlang and scaled to 2 million concurrent connections per server. Elixir inherits the BEAM VM and all its reliability guarantees.
