Scheme distilled Lisp to a minimal core — first-class functions, proper tail calls, hygienic macros, and continuations — without sacrificing power. It is the language of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP), one of the most influential programming textbooks. R7RS is the current standard; implementations include Guile, Chez Scheme, and MIT Scheme.
